This statue symbolises the 18th-century fight by Charles-Gabriel-Frédéric Christin, a lawyer and future mayor and deputy of Saint-Claude, and his friend Voltaire, a writer and philosopher, against the persistence of mainmorte (the right of the lord to seize the estate of his serf on his death) in the former land of Saint-Claude. A rule perceived as a survival of feudalism in the Age of Enlightenment.
